Despite large amounts of research, the actual date of formation of 287 Squadron is still unknown, with some sources suggesting that it originally formed part of the ADCC, the predecessor to the ATC. However, other sources suggest that originally there was only 1 Squadron in Edinburgh and the others were formed as Detached Flights of 35F Squadron.
During World War 2, there were 8 Squadrons in the Edinburgh area: 35F, 142, 286,287, 288,1141,1142 and 1143. They were named 1st-8th Edinburgh respectively. Of these, only 142, 287 and 1143 remain inexistence today. As such, 287 Squadron is now the second most senior Squadron in Edinburgh.
The original home of 287 Squadron was at Learmonth Terrace. However, in November 1953, the Squadron moved into premises in Stenhouse Drive, Edinburgh, where they stayed until May 2009 when the Edinburgh Trams project meant the building needed to be demolished. During this time, a co-habitation agreement was set up with 870 (Dreghorn) Squadron.
Finally, after 2 years of displacement, the Squadron moved into brand new premises in April 2011. Steadily numbers once began to rise and the Squadron pride was restored as a new chapter in the history of 287 Squadron was opened.
The Squadron crest is currently being updated to reflect this new chapter.
287 Squadron currently parades Monday and Thursday evenings from 7pm-9.45pm, at 80 Stevenson Drive, Edinburgh, which is directly adjacent to Saughton Sports Complex. The current Squadron roll is approximately 30 Cadets.
